Experience a traditional Japanese bento routine with a wooden bento box! Wooden bento boxes were popular during the 1700 to 1900's in Japan before the rise of plastics.
This magewappa wood bento box boasts a traditional Japanese pattern called Ichimatsu (checkered pattern), in a green and black combination. This pattern has been made even more well known globally by certain anime works in Japanese pop culture. Because this Ichimatsu pattern appears to continue on and on, it symbolizes prosperity and progress, and is meant to bring good luck.
Choosing to use a wooden bento box does have some usage and maintenance limitations in todays' modern world. But bento connoisseurs will appreciate the aesthetic and aroma of a wooden bento box.
Cedar wood has been use to craft this bento box. While not microwavable, its humidity control properties keeps rice and other contents delicious despite being cold. The consumption of a cold bento is actually the norm in Japan, and the food is made to accodmodate this practice. The faint aroma of the cedar and wood grain textures also adds to a relaxing bento experience.
An elastic black lunch band comes with this bento box to keep the lid secure during transport. There is also a removable T-shaped divider that lets you separate food as needed.

There may be a strong wood smell when first opened. Please wash your new bento box before first use. The smell will eventually fade.
If the smell still bothers, you can take the following steps to remove it.
- Save the run-off water from washing rice, warm it up, and add a little cooking vinegar to it (can use normal water as an alternative). Use this to rinse and wipe the bento box. Then wash off with warm water. Repeat several times. Make sure to wipe and air dry after the process.
Washing
- Rinse off any food first with water (warm water if possible). Do not soak in water.
- Use household dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge to wash the box. Do not scrub hard. Do not use bleach or other chemicals.
- Rinse with warm water if possible to assist air drying.
- Wipe off water as much as possible, and air dry with the box/lid facing up.
- Do not leave in sunlight, or near hot objects.
Maintenance
- **Always make sure to wipe dry with a soft towel after washing, and air dry.**
- Do not soak in water.
- Avoid brushes or hard scrubbers when washing. Avoid stacking with other items.
- If coating is damaged, this may lead to dirt buildup over time which will create a stain.
- When drying, face the inside of the bento box and lid up for as much ventilation as possible.
- Store in a cool, dry area.
- Heat and humidity can lead to warping and mould growth; Too dry conditions can lead to shrinkage over time.
- Stains and other natural damage will appear over time with wooden bento boxes. This is normal, but adds to the authenticity and character of it. While there may be many things to be careful about, the most important thing is to accept what it is and enjoy this wonderful product!
