This is a stunning picnic (jubako) bento box featuring Japanese temari balls. Temari balls are a combination of performance art and craft. They are traditionally made from embroidery and were used for juggling and as toys to play 'kemari', a type of hacky sack. Temari balls were given as a New Year's gift for children, and like many things Japanese, developed into a art form where artisans would create the  most beautiful and intricate patterns.

The temari balls on this 3 layered picnic bento box (called jubako) have been hand printed and finished by 'maki-e' (gold powder coating technique) in a multi-printing process. The result is a beautiful fusion of a modern bento box design with a traditional Japanese aesthetic.

Each layer has a capacity of 1300ml. You will be able to easily recreate the Japanese New Year's traditional food called osechi ryori, or pack it with delicious delights for a special gathering. This item will be surely be a focal point of any event.

Comes with 3 inner lids that lets you cap each layer so you can store or transport the contents separately if needed. An elastic bento band also comes with the box so that you can secure the 3 layers without worry..

How is it made?

The base material is an ABS resin over which 2 coatings is performed. The first coating is a vermillion colour, over which a deep maroon is overlayed. This creates a black appearance, but if you look closely, you can actually see a red hue in the background. The temari patterns are then silk screen printed by hand over the sides of the bento box, after which gold and other coloured powders are delicately hand applied to create the final design.
